one printed business card titled, "Charles A. Gurley, General Shipping and Commision Merchant, San Francisco, Ca." Underneath
this title is a list of references, many of whom are from New York [City].

Charles Artemas Gurley (1811-1890) sailed for San Francisco aboard the ship Falcon bound for Chagres, Panama on February 2,
1849. In California, he purchased half of what is now the Portsmouth Square from pioneer landowner, José de Jésus Noe of Rancho
San Miguel. Gurley avidly supported California as a free territory but returned East for good in 1851.
